The rain and the snow has returned to California and this year's trip to Sky Forest was a winter wonderland! It has been raining non-stop for the last few weeks and they say that the drought may soon be over. As a result, the dive up to Sky Forest was amazing--piled high with snow on the side of the road and in the trees at just 6,000 feet.
My favorite part of the trip was the sledding. On the first morning, we built a sled run just outside the cabin front door. The Hodgsons--Dylan and Elisa--helped Chris and I to cut a run into the hill that comes down from the road and into the driveway while the mom's yelled at the dad's to "build a wall" to stop us from continuing down the steep hill on the side of the cabin and into the highway. The dad's tried to cover all the big rocks and build a wall sufficient to stop us from plunging to our deaths, but "Trump's wall" was only good for a moment--and we soon picked-up speed and scaled it with our sleds.
This was all just practice though for the big sledding trips that we took each morning to the "Super-Secret-Special-Sledding-Spot" that we have at Running Spring Elementary School. The traffic getting through Running Spring (only 6 miles away) took us an hour to get through, but the wait was worth it because we were the first explorers to set foot on the fresh powder that had piled up 2-3 feet deep during the blizzard that hit Running Springs the previous weekend. It was dream stuff--and didn't hurt when you wiped-out. Over the weekend--and the Sky Forest Olympics--we had some of our best and fastest sledding (which I won for distance and JD won for speed). A very memorable sledding year!
We also celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday at Sky Forest this year, listening to speeches, making puzzles, watching football, and sharing our own "dreams" for America. Of course, there is a major change in power happening this January with Barack Obama handing the sacred responsibilities of the Presidency over to Donald Trump on January 20th, which is on everyone's minds. At first, we all shared very self-interested dreams for American (that everyone would like the Vikings, or that we would get to play more Xbox), but once we got the hang of it we decided that our dreams would be more hopeful:
Mom: that everyone would have an excellent education
Maria: that her hometown in Mexico would be peaceful again
Dad: that hard work would be rewarded
Ben: the end of poverty
Chris: that everyone would have a home
Dylan: that everyone would like football
Elisa: I forgot
JD: I forgot
