Kinder Graduation & Fathers Day Weekend (week 495)

It was the last day of school at Patrick Henry on Thursday, and the Summer officially began with a major heat wave in Southern California.  While dad had to travel most of the week to Louisville, we were ending the school year with a series of park days, plays, parties, and a Kinder graduation ceremony in the Patrick Henry auditorium.

Christopher graduated from Kindergarten on Thursday.  He was surprisingly sad to see the end and wanted to spend as much time as possible with Sra. Ferrera before the week was over.  We both brought flowers and cards for our teachers (with mom's help), and after the graduation ceremony where Chris has some lines in Spanish, he and Mady danced and partied on the playground.  The 3rd grades had a park day where we ate hot dogs and played sports.

This week was also the culmination of the 3rd Grade play--the Great Kapok Tree.  The play was about preserving the environment and why the tree was so important to the animals in the jungle.  I didn't have a major part in this one and was upset at first.  However, it ended up being a good learning lesson for me and I enjoyed it in the end.

It was also a big week for baseball.  After winning our first 3 games in the Battle at the Beach tournament (our own tournament), we lost to Redondo Beach Sunset in the first game of the championship final.  Since it was double elimination and they already had a loss, we got a second shot and beat them Tuesday night in a thriller that went back and forth.  We went 4-1 in the tournament and it was the first time that I was part of a team that won the Battle at the Beach.

Over the weekend, we played in the xtream tournament in Garden Grove.  We went 4-1 in the tournament over two days--Fathers Day weekend--and beat a couple of really good teams in close 1-run games. It was a hot weekend in Anaheim/Garden Grove hitting 103 on Sunday and we were at the field from 700 am - 600 pm for three games. Chris made it through the first four games of the tournament creating clay sculptures, watching movies on Netflix in his tent, playing lots of Legos and eating lots of treats.  He and dad also spent lots of time on the playground running an obstacle course. He has really matured this year and is able to hang out a lot more without getting upset.  He did get to skip the championship game thanks to the Hubers who took him for snow cones and swimming at their house.

We lost the championship game to Irvine, the reigning Pony World Series Champions, 6-5 after leading by one run going into the bottom of the last inning.  We ended-up making a critical error (and not getting any help from the umpire), and losing in a walk-off by Irvine.  It was good for me because I was obsessed with Irvine and got to see that they were just a bunch of kids like me, and that we can play right with them.

We finished out Fathers Day at the Hubers with pool, ribs, and Game 7 of the NBA Championship between the Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors.  The Cavs completed the improbably comeback from down 3-1 by beating the reigning champions on their own court and denied the Warriors a second championship.
