A few months ago, Mom and Dad started talking about ripping out our front lawn and replacing it with something less desirable. I was okay with the idea of putting artificial turf grass in as a replacement, but they said it would be even worse than that--flagstone, plants, and decomposed granite (ugh). Apparently, ripping out your grass and turning it back to native plants is all the rage in Long Beach right now because we are in a massive drought and everyone thinks it is a good idea to eliminate grass. As a huge sports fan and a lover of golf courses and stadiums, this is totally depressing.
In any case, the Water Department sent us a letter a couple of months ago saying to go ahead and rip it out. In addition to the solar panels now on our roof, the Keislers are trying to save the world by saving water. The Water Department will even pay for it.
So, over the last few weekends Dad began renting sod cutters and ripping out the lawn. Next, the entire family participated in shoveling and sweeping dead grass and dirt into the truck and the empty trash cans to get rid of it. In the end, we were left with a huge wasteland of a front yard without any real hope of a place to play.
Well, the guys who actually know about landscaping came two weeks ago and started putting in some cool stuff. Over last weekend, Mom and Dad have been breaking up all the remaining stone, sweeping in the decomposed granite, and making it look like the real deal. I have to say that I didn't have much hope, but I am pretty happy with our new desert landscape!
