For a while, mom and dad tried to get me to read to them each night before going to bed. Because I was so tired (and still fall asleep in about 30 seconds), it was a struggle. I don't like reading out loud very much to begin with so this wasn't a great way to end my day. Over the past few months, we have changed our approach. Now, after brushing our teeth, dad has the responsibility to reach to us before we fall asleep. Actually, I still fall asleep in about 30 seconds and Chris stays awake asking to see pictures, asking for water, screwing around, and trying to avoid the inevitable. So far it has worked pretty well and we have made our way through the "Three Muskateers", "BFG", and "James and the Giant Peach". We download our stories on the Kindle so that dad can read in the day (which helps me fall asleep in about 30 seconds).
To make up for the fact that I don't read at night anymore, I cut a deal with dad to read the entire Children's Bible out loud in the morning. Actually, I only read one Bible story to dad each morning as he makes breakfast; but the stories are short and sweet, and we get to talk about (a) did the story really actually happen, (b) what is the story trying to teach us, and (c) does dad think that the story really actually happened. It has been a good compromise and we are making our way through the stories at a pretty good clip now. I highlight the title of the story each time I finish one so that I can see my progress. Dad has promised a big, fun, celebration when we finish the entire thing.
Also this week, Chris and I got to go to the La Brea Tar Pits. We saw all kinds of things but the most impressive was the bird that got caught in the tar. I don't ever want to get caught in the tar is what we all learned, so we are keeping our eyes open at the beach. We also learned that dad has the same jaw bone as a dinosaur. Actually, Nathan saw a big dinosaur skeleton and made the comment that it looked like my dad. We spent another summer day at the beach and then had baseball all weekend.
Our baseball season finally came to an end this weekend as well. The ELB U7 Select season ended with a record of roughly 15-10 at the Super Regionals in Camarillo. We actually never beat a team with a winning record over the 2.5 months of all stars, but we had fun most of the time and I got about 14 innings under my belt. Each morning, the family got up real early and drove out to Camarillo to be at the field by 8:00 am. We hit La Cabana in Santa Paula on the way back the first night (Grandpa John and Grammy's favorite restaurant), and got to see the World Cup Final between Germany and Argentina at a sports bar in between games. Actually, it was a TGI Fridays but it was an exciting game that Germany ended up winning 1-0 in overtime to capture their 4th World Cup trophy. Watching soccer got me excited about soccer season, so about 3 hours after we lost our baseball game, I had the goals out in the backyard and Chris doing drills. I am ready for a new season!
