Captain America (week 320)

We are not exactly sure when it happened, but sometime since the start of the New Year, a superhero arrived at our house in Long Beach.  He is about 3 feet tall, 40 pounds, has blond hair, a black cape, a red-white-and-blue shield, and when asked his name he says "Captain America"!

I was never much into superheros.  My main interest was in guys like Albert Pujols and Eric Aybar, big stadiums, and shooting hoopies.  Christopher on the other hand, is obsessed with the battle between good guys and bad guys and loves to tell stories of their epic struggles to save the world.  It began with watching old episodes of Spider Man on Netflix and has evolved into action figures, Lego constructs, and all kinds of imaginary conquests in the backyard (with black cape of course).

This was a good week for us.  Although I have started a new season of baseball--with my new team the Pirates--I have also rediscovered my love of basketball.  And while we are now practicing on Saturdays, hitting and throwing throughout the week, I have also started building basketball stadiums out of Legos and shooting hoops in the backyard every chance that I can get.

On Saturday night, Daddy took Christopher and I to the Pyramid at Long Beach State to see the 49ers play against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  I was a little conflicted because Grandpa John takes me to Cal Poly games when we visit him and we always cheer for the Mustangs.  This time, they were in Long Beach to play our home team and we had to cheer against them.  The Pyramid was full and the 49ers pulled out an exciting win.  The game was actually pretty low scoring but the ending was very exciting.  It came down to a couple of big shots, some free throws, and a lot of noise making.

I was obsessed with the drummer in the band, the shot clocks, the lights on the backboard that went off every time that time expired, and pictures that the students were holding up to try to distract the free throw shooters.  Captain America on the other hand was passed out on Daddy's lap for almost the entire second half.  He slept through all of the stomping, yelling, and craziness...there was even a great heckler and a crazy dancer...but it didn't budge Captain America.  He woke-up just in time to see the time expire and the celebration start.  Someday, I want to play basketball in a big stadium like that.
