Huntington Gardens (week 283)

After last weekend's Mothers Day debacle, we realized that we came to the realization that it was unrealistic to think that three boys could hang around the house all day without getting into trouble.  With Chris now squarely in the middle of his terrible twos, our job is to keep him busy, keep him moving, and keep him off balance.  At five years old, daddy says that I have energy to burn...and that I will either use my energy for good or for evil.  So from the moment that we woke-up on Saturday morning (and after he got back from the gym), daddy had us moving.  Mommy got us dressed, daddy threw Chris into the stroller and we headed for the bagel store--Grounds--while mommy took her five-mile run with Michelle.

The walk to the bagel store is about one mile each way.  Chris still rides in the stroller a lot of the time, but gets to run along the sidewalk in the neighborhood on the way home.  I ride my Razor Scooter the entire way.  After eating two full toasted wheat bagels with cream cheese, we walked back to get ready for the surprise day.  Daddy told us that we were going to go somewhere new that we had never been before and looking at places on his phone, we decided upon the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens in San Marino.
It turned out to be a perfect place for us.  We had lots of room to run and walk.  Of course, Christopher crashed within the first 10 minutes running down the hill in the Desert Garden and scraped his knees.  There was a Lily Pond, Jungle Garden, Chinese Garden, Rose Garden, and Children's Garden among others.  We loved the bridges and paths in the Chinese Garden, the Japanese House, and the Water Garden.  We also discovered that Christopher has a huge passion for art museums.  We saw Gilbert Stuart's famous painting of George Washington that is the picture on the dollar bill.  By the time that we got to the museum (over three hours and a couple more miles of walking), I was exhausted but Christopher got a second wind and ran from room to room pointing out the paintings and sculptures.  He was particularly impressed with a sculpted bust of a cherub that he thought was sleeping.  He told everyone in the viewing room to be quite so that the baby could sleep.

It's fun to see Christopher's interests emerge.  While my hobbies are more organized sports, games, and stadiums; Christopher really loves painting, water, sand, and the arts.  We both love to run and sing.  He likes to paint.  I like to draw.  Whatever you look at, we are very different dudes.  We both have a lot of energy and endurance, and we both need a lot of activity.  Life is never static around our house...and when it does slow down--mommy and daddy call it relaxing--we just get ourselves into trouble--mommy and daddy call it nagging and harassing.
We have been sleeping much better at night (although last night I woke-up daddy three times yelling out in my sleep).  In our morning measurements, I am now 48 inches or 4 feet tall!  Christopher came-in at a cool 38 inches which is about 3 feet and 2 inches tall although he kept turning around and eventually fell over because he wanted to see the tape measure.  Baby bird registered a tall 6 inches.
