Memorial Day Weekend (and the mysterious Crow) (week 439)

The Memorial Day holiday weekend arrived in Southern California, which for an 8 year old indicates that the end of school and the beginning of Summer is finally here. It was a super nice and mild weekend so we swam, barbecued, rode scooters with no shoes or shirts on, and played baseball! For the 3rd straight year, we spent our Memorial Day Weekend back-and-forth between the Fountain Valley Sports Complex and Long Beach playing in our first baseball tournament against travel ball and all star teams from around Southern California.  A mysterious guest also arrived in our backyard.

On Friday afternoon, an old black crow arrived in our backyard.  After having just gone through the memorial services for our baby possum, the arrival of the old black crow was either a strange coincidence or the result of karma we have been collecting over the last few weeks.  At first, we thought that he was a sick or had been beaten up by the flock of crows that had been circling our neighborhood and nesting the nearby trees.  However, although he was old and frail, he found a spot on the old wooden chair by the basketball hoop and stayed through the night.

When Dad awoke Saturday morning, the old black crow was still alive.  In fact, another black crow was sitting on the wire above him all night long and keeping watch over him. Whenever one of use would walk outside to check on him, the watch-crow would fly in circles around the backyard and "crow" at us.  Sometimes, he would call out to other from around the neighborhood to join in the watch. We think that the other crows were also bringing him food to keep him alive.

As of Monday morning--Memorial Day--our old black crow is still crowing.  He continues to spend his nights on the back of the wooden chair and there are still other crows coming down to see him.  We think that he may be an important crow and that he is being cared for by the flock.  Chris and I are both very concerned about whether or not he is going to die, but Dad just tells us that God has chosen our backyard as a place where the old, sick, or injured animals can come to be cared for.

On Saturday morning, we started our All Star Season at Fountain Valley Sports Complex. For the most part, this year's U8 All Star A Team is the same as last year.  There are a few different kids, but mostly kids and coaches that I know from last year and play against in the league every week.  I am the only Red Sox player, but since we won 2 playoff games last week, we are still alive in the ELB playoffs and battling our way back toward a championship.  After losing our first game as the No.1 seed, we have to win 7 straight to take the title!  We beat the Dodgers in the No.1 vs. No.4 seed game, and I went 2-2, struck out 6, and helped our team to a 11-1 win.

For All Stars, we went 1-1 on Saturday but came back to win 2 games on Sunday.  We are now playing up to 3 more games on Monday for the tournament championship.  Since the Red Sox are still alive in the League playoffs, I haven't been able to pitch in the All Star tournament.  I have been up 8 times and one of only 3 kids to not strike out, but I keep hitting the ball directly at the other team.  I did have a huge defensive play to end a close game against the Torrance Tides club team, throwing a guy out at 3rd base from the warning track. I am having a great time and really like playing with the All Stars.
In other news, Chris and I are super into monster movies.  Godzilla is our favorite for now...we watch it over and over.  We both have a lot of empathy for Godzilla who is trying to protect San Francisco and save the world against Mothra.  He sacrifices his own well being in the defense of the human race; all very good stuff.  Chris is also painting and drawing really good stuff.  He likes to draw and paint things from around the house and recently drew a still life on his own that includes Mom's hand holding a glass of wine.  I guess this is a common scene in the Keisler household!
